2002 KPAA Scholarship Winners

Christopher Gray, California High School, San Ramon

Chris is a National Merit Finalist and Semi-Finalist for the American Legion Boys State Program. He actively participates in the community by volunteering at the San Ramon Teen Council for the past two years and by tutoring middle school students. At school, Chris has participated in the Model United Nations Club, Academic Decathlon and Junior Statesmen of America. He also participates on the Track and Field team, competing in the one and two mile events. Chris plans on attending Stanford University or one of the University of California campuses with a possible major in pre-law.

Judith Li, Monta Vista High School, Cupertino

Judith has many achievements as a part of her resume. Academically, she is a National Merit Finalist, Presidential Scholar Finalist and ShopKo Scholar. In the fine arts area, Judith played the violin with the El Camino Youth Symphony and has been the Concertmistress, Principal and soloist. She also has been the U.S. Open Showcase Solo Winner for her skills in playing the piano. Her community work includes being awarded Builder of the Year by the Kiwanis Club, volunteering at both Agnews Mental Hospital and El Camino Hospital for the past three years, and Editor and Youth Group Leader for the Tzu-Chi Youth Group. At school, she is the Editor of the school newspaper, President of the school's Amnesty International Chapter, and President of the Future Physicians of America. Judith plans on attending either Harvard or Rice University to begin her studies in pre-medicine.

Shanam Saini, Wilcox High School, Santa Clara

Shanam is the President of the South Asian Preventive Health Outreach program from Stanford University that provides outreach medical services to elderly South Asians. As a high school student, Shanam organized the Stanford medical students, expanded their outreach efforts to increase the number of patients seen and enabled the organization to become associated with the national American Association of Physicians of Indian Origin. She is also active with the City Youth Commission of Santa Clara and helped to create a Teen Center. She is Founder and President of her school's Young Scientists of America Club, President of the school's Soroptimist Club, and she also found time to write and direct a school musical. Shanam plans on attending the University of California at Berkeley to begin her studies in pre-medicine.

Jennifer Yu, Oakland High School, Oakland

Jennifer received the Youth of Valor Award from the Anti-Defamation League and Bay Area Urban League. She also is an active panelist on KDOL TV-18's monthly Counselor Community Connection broadcast that discusses issues pertaining to the Oakland community and school district. Jennifer has interned with Assemblywoman Wilma Chan and Alameda County Supervisor Alice Lai-Bitker and continues her political involvement at her school as the elected Senior Class President. She is also Oakland High's Delegate to the All-City Council for monthly district-wide meetings and is Chair of the Nutrition Policy Committee for the school district. Jennifer plans on attending either the University of California at Berkeley or Los Angeles.
